Chinese Medicine is a popular ancient practice based off of principles like yin and yang which utilizes acupuncture and herbal remedies as effective alternative medical practices. Chinese medicine is a historically holistic practice that is available world-wide today. Traditional Chinese medicine, also known as TCM, is commonly and primarily used in many parts of Asia, but most Western countries still consider
TCM to be complementary or alternative medicine for the newer Western medicinal practices. However, it is estimated that there are over 10,000 licensed Chinese medicine practitioners in America alone (NCCAM). According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, an estimated 3.1 million U.S. adults had used acupuncture in the previous year. Almost a fifth of all Americans have used natural products like herbs for their health. These numbers increase every year. Traditional Chinese medicine is becoming a more respectable and widespread practice as continuing research proves it as being effective and helpful. The most common treatments in Chinese medicine are acupuncture and herbal remedies; Massage, cupping, moxibustion, and acupressure are also important therapies. Chinese medicine prides itself on its holistic treatment of the patient which acknowledges and takes into consideration all potential contributing factors that may affect a person's well-being. In a TCM office, the licensed practitioner diagnoses the patient by personal examination and questionnaire. The past, present, and future state of a patient’s body and mind is taken into account before deciding on a prescription or treatment. Every patient is considered to be different, and every person’s illness is treated differently. Treatments are tailored to the patient and illness, not just to the illness. The patient is offered a permanent treatment for their illness rather than given medicine to just relieve pain. This idea is the driving force behind TCM’s popularity in many present-day cultures. Many people today use acupuncture and herbal remedies to care for their ailments.
