There are two main elements in Chinese medicine that cause diseases. The external causes of illness are more well-known. The lesser known internal causes of illnesses relates to the health of the mind and spirit. The
ancient Chinese categorized these five causes as heat, cold, dampness, dryness, or wind. These are the bad atmospheres a body can contract due to an excess of that specific atmosphere. For example, adults are playing with their kids under the hot summer sun. They also experienced an outburst of joy after a long stressful work week. A sudden shift to the heat related emotion of joy went hand in hand with the extremely hot weather to cause the adult to become dehydrated and experience a heat stroke. Again, a balance is very important to maintain health and prevent illness from occurring.
